Tarshis Scholarship GuidelinesRebecca and Sada Tarshis stunned the community in 2002 by leaving a surprise bequest of over $2.7 million to 14 organizations. Approximately $430,000 was left to OJCF to establish the Rebecca and Sada Tarshis Memorial Scholarship Fund. What made this gift so remarkable was its unexpectedness. Long-time members of Congregation Shaarie Torah, the sisters were models of modesty and discretion. Both women worked all their lives for a normal income and there were no inheritances. The gift was the result of years of careful saving and wise investing. The OJCF holds Rebecca and Sada up as examples, and heroes to the community. The scholarship will provide tuition assistance to Oregon resident Jewish students for higher education, including college, university and/or graduate school, on the basis of financial need and academic merit with scholarships of up to $5,000 per recipient per year. The deadline for submitting applications is May 1ST annually (if May 1ST falls on Saturday or Sunday, the deadline is the following Monday). Applications must be postmarked by this date or they will not be accepted. To be eligible for this scholarship, the applicant must be a Jewish resident of Oregon and demonstrate financial need and academic merit.
