The PJ (Pajama) Library

“The PJ Library is a wonderful program for young families in our community. Not only does it provide great books with Jewish relevance for young children at no cost, but it takes the guesswork out of it, a special assist for interfaith families who aren’t sure what to look for when choosing Jewish books for their children.” - Lois Shenker, Facilitator for The Mothers’ Circle*

Introduced to Portland in 2007, The PJ (“PJ” for pajama) Library is our investment to help ensure the future of our Jewish community by engaging and invigorating more Jewish households. The program provides FREE Jewish-content bedtime books and music on a monthly basis for one year to children ages six months to six years belonging to families in the Portland Metro Area with at least one Jewish parent. After one year, families may elect to continue their subscription for a nominal donation. PJ Library families include interfaith, unaffiliated and those already involved but who are seeking new ways to explore and deepen their Jewish connections.

Each book and CD comes with guides to help your family use the selection in your home. The book and music list was chosen by the foremost early-childhood experts. The list includes a wide array of themes such as Jewish holidays, folktales and Jewish family life. Many of the books have won prestigious awards including The Caldecott Medal. The Portland based Oy Baby music is extremely popular nationwide.

Created by the now-world-famous Harold Grinspoon Foundation, the PJ Library in Portland would not have been possible without the generosity of local mothers and grandmothers (pictured left to right with OJCF PJ Library Director, Julie Diamond), Renee Holzman (through the Holzman Foundation), Shirlee Lenske, Eve Stern, Elizabeth Menashe, and Lois Schnitzer (through the Leonard and Lois Schnitzer Supporting Foundation of the OJCF).

*The Mothers Circle Program provides free educational programs and resources for non-Jewish women raising Jewish children. It is a program of the Jewish Outreach Institute (JOI).
