| Founded in 1991 by Rabbi Laurie Rutenberg and Rabbi Gary Schoenberg, Oregon’s first rabbinical couple, Gesher presents a new model of welcome into Jewish life. Given the profound changes in Jewish community and family life, Gesher seeks to promote an understanding that Jewish life can be a vital resource to modern living, providing nourishment, joy, Torah learning, and a more vital connection to community life. Gesher includes the widest spectrum of observance: from traditional seeking Jews to secular, disaffected Jews. Gesher seeks to build bridges to Jewish life. The Hebrew word Gesher means “bridge.” As community, Gesher presents a framework of welcome for newcomers, singles, and intermarried families. Friday evening service and dinner by reservation; Saturday morning service with potluck vegetarian lunch; holiday workshops and celebrations; family education; spirituality groups; Torah study; cooking co-ops; Judaica boos and ritual items. |
