Services held at 3225 SW Barber Blvd., Portland, OR 97201
Since 1916, Congregation Ahavath Achim has been Oregon’s only Sephardic synagogue. The traditions of the many faces of Sephartic culture have come together in this unique congregation. Our small congregation is a friendly alternative to larger synagogues. Ahavath Achim is anything but dull. In the best Sephartic tradition, our services are filled with the melodies and songs from Jews of Spanish/Ladino, Middle Eastern, and Israeli descent. Our services are highly participatory and children are welcomed; children play a vital part in both the services and synagogue life. Our seating arrangements allow both separate seating for traditionalists, and family seating for those who wish to have that option.
Ahavath Achim is not just for the Sephardim. Many of our members are of Ashkenazic descent, who find at Ahavath Achim the kind of joy and zest for Judaism that they thought was lost. Adding to the experience is our synagogue building, with a round domed sanctuary. The synagogue's accoustics have become legendary in the area. Arguably, you won't find a more beautiful or warmer environment in which to pray.
We hold services on Friday evenings at 6 p.m., Saturday morning services at 9 a.m., and most holidays. Our Saturday Shabbat services are usually followed by a kiddush luncheon where congregants can get to know one another in a relaxed atmosphere. Please accept our invitation to visit Congregation Ahavath Achim. You will have a pleasurable religious experience that you will not forget. |
